Taiwan's Mobile Product Production to Hit US$ 575 Million in 2000
Posted: 25-Dec-1999 [Source: Commercial Times, Taiwan]

[Taiwan mobile product makers are ready to develop mobile products using WAP according to this report.]

TAIPEI -- "Industrial Technology Research Institute statistics show that Taiwan's mobile product production will increase to NT$18.2 billion (about US$575 million) in 2000.

"Volume is expected to break the 10-million mark.

"The institute indicated that mobile production started to take off this year, at a volume of 2.8 million sets valued at NTD 3.62 billion, compared with 35,000 sets in 1998 valued at NTD 190 million. (NTD 31.66 = USD 1)

"Such companies as Acer Peripherals Inc., GVC Group and Dialer and Business Electronics Co., Ltd. started to ramp up production. Dialer's Shanghai facility launched contract manufacturing for Motolora Inc., while both Acer Peripherals and GVC set up production lines at home and accumulated adequate production know-how to meet fast-growing demand. The three companies are expected to increase production noticeably next year.

"More than 10 other leading makers such as Inventec Corp., Kinpo Electronics Group, Quanta Computer Corp. and Compal Electronic Inc. have conducted considerable research and development.

"Domestic suppliers also actively made inroads into CDMA mobile products. Acer formed a strategic alliance with U.S.-based Qualcomm Inc., while GVC signed a cooperation agreement with a Korean counterpart. Makers such as Lite-On Technology Corp. and GVC are scheduled to launch production in 2000.

"Overall, mobile product makers are ready to develop mobile products using WAP and other transmission techniques to raise the value-added level.
