Kyocera to Buy CDMA Cellular Phone Unit from Qualcomm
Posted: 29-Dec-1999 [Source: Nikkei Communications]

[Acquisition of Qualcomm Inc.'s cellular phone handset manufacturing unit to take place "by February 2000".]

TOKYO -- "Kyocera Corp. announced that Kyocera International Inc., its U.S. subsidiary, agreed to buy Qualcomm Inc.'s cellular phone handset manufacturing unit by February 2000.

"San Diego-based Qualcomm is a developer of the code division multiple access (CDMA) technology, a wireless communications protocol for cellular phones.

"Kyocera's move is seen by industry analysts as a means to establish a foothold in the market of cellular phones based on CDMA, a core technology for the next-generation cellular phone.

"The acquisition will enable Kyocera to make and sell CDMA cellular phone terminals in the United States in addition to its current markets in Japan and Korea. The major CDMA phone maker hopes to dramatically expand its sales of such cellular phone handsets to over 15 million units in fiscal 2000.

"Qualcomm will stop producing cellular phone handsets and will focus on development of CDMA-related know-how as well as development and output of microchips for such technologies.
