SAN JOSE, Calif. -- "Millions of people who stayed home on New Year's Eve could still be a part of all the excitement, simply by logging on to their home computers.

"From the Navy's offering of the first sunrise of the millennium to the Times Square 2000 Web site where viewers could watch the ball drop with room to breathe, the 21st century arrived in technological glory.

"A poll of America Online members showed 43 percent planned to log on to see what's happening in the virtual world on New Year's Eve. In response, AOL prepared a ``Party of the Millennium'' with chat rooms and 11 live celebrations from 11 cities.

``We know a lot of people plan to be home and online on New Year's Eve and we're looking forward to offering them a great night around the world,'' said Jonathan Sacks, general manager of AOL Interactive Services.

"One of the more comprehensive spots to watch was earthcam.com, which put 100 Web cameras in 24 different time zones to broadcast live the beginning of the New Year.

"The project took EarthCam most of a year to set up, and the site was expecting ``record-breaking levels in terms of Internet traffic,'' CEO Brian Cury said.
