By Robert Whitinger - Las Vegas, Nevada -- Gary Shapiro, President and CEO of the Consumer Electronics Show officially opened CES2000 today, calling it "the first big event of the new millenium."
In a digital consumer technologies market that hit US$30 billion last year and expects US$38 billion this year, the internet and especially wireless internet is expected to play a key role as it is poised for explosive growth.
"We are mobile. We provide anywhere, anytime access to information, entertainment and education without wires."
"We are defining the lifestyle and workstyle of the 21st Century," according to Shapiro, "already, we are making the world smaller and we are making the world better. In short, we are changing how and where people work and communicate and even how they are educated and receive health care."
CES, sponsored by the Consumer Electronics Association, is the world's largest annual trade show for consumer technology, with an expected attendance of over 90,000.
