[Day 2 of the Consumer Electronics Show began in Las Vegas with a demonstration of voice email over WAP.]
Las Vegas -- CES2000 opened its second day in Las Vegas Nevada with a Technology Keynote address featuring Rob Glaser, Founder and CEO of RealNetworks, Inc. Glaser introduced RealAudio at CES in 1995 and continues to push the frontiers in the field of multi-media internet.
The morning consumer crowd was served a fast moving and upbeat demonstration including a range of the latest gadgets, ranging from an MP3 watch from Cassio (great sound from such a small device!), RealJukebox(tm), and also a WAP based email service from Shoutmail.com.
Shoutmail.com is offering free email and instant messaging services that are accessible by WAP enabled phones as well as other internet enabled handsets. The service not only allows the user to see an email message in text form, but also lets the user record a voice reply. Shoutmail converts this voice reply into a RealAudio file and sends it to any email address in the world as an attachment. The demonstration used a Sprint PCS phone connection.
The Shoutmail demonstration seems to follow a theme expressed by many of the CES participants this year -- simplicity. In an industry looking for the best way to produce a "satisfying user experience," service suppliers are moving away from general purpose complex applications, and are moving in the direction of special purpose simple applications.
