Posted: 02-Feb-2000 [Source: CNet]

[Sun and Netscape plan a wireless portal software package called iPlanet Wireless Server.]

Palo Alto, Calif. -- A Sun-Netscape Alliance plans to ship software in March that will let people access their e-mail, calendars and address books from cell phones and handheld computers with wireless Internet connections. The product, called iPlanet Wireless Server, is designed for telecommunications companies, Web portal sites and businesses that offer wireless Internet services, said Barbara Kay, product marketing director at the Alliance.

With the new software, the joint venture between Sun Microsystems Inc. of Palo Alto, Calif., and Netscape, a subsidiary of Dulles, Va.-based America Online Inc., joins a host of other companies hoping to furnish Internet service providers and portal sites with the technology to offer wireless Internet content.
