IBM, Symbian in Wireless Net Deal

[The Symbian Developer Conference in Santa Clara was the venue for this announcement from IBM and Symbian.]

Santa Clara, Calif. -- "International Business Machines Corp. (IBM.N) and Symbian said on Tuesday they would create software for business users that would give users of Symbian-based wireless Smartphones and Communicators instant access to Web and corporate data.

"Users would be able to work with the information without the need for a continuous network connection.

"Symbian, a venture grouping several leading mobile phone makers, would provide the technology to power the Smartphone or Communicator devices. IBM would supply software to support security and reliability in the transmission of data.
