[Standard Telecom announces a new GSM chipset. ]

Korea -- "A Korean venture firm has developed a key chipset for mobile phones based on GSM (global system for mobile communication), the European digital cellular standard.

"Standard Telecom yesterday unveiled the new application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC), code-named "GINI 2," which combines CPU, digital signal processing and communication control circuit in a single, high-density chip.

"The company said only 10 firms around the world, including Nokia, Ericsson and Motorola, possess the chipset technology, which is key to reducing size and manufacturing cost of mobile phones.

...

"Standard Telecom spent $10 million in developing the chipset over the past five years. The project was conducted at Nixxo Technology, its research center located in California.

"The company said it will start mass production of the GINI 2 chipset and handsets in the second quarter of this year after its technology is approved by Europe's GSM agency.

"The company expects the chipset technology will speed up its other projects to develop PDA (personal digital assistance) and WAP (wireless application protocol)-based digital communications devices. (HJJ)
