Hannover -- Samsung Electronics Co; Ltd is demonstrating its leading role in 3G/IMT-2000 wireless technology. Using live network equipment, the company is showing wireless video conferencing between 3G/cdma2000 mobile phones with small colour LCD panels.

Third generation (3G) wireless technology will allow users to make voice and video calls, access the Internet, and receive e-mail, from a mobile terminal or handset. The International Telecommunications Union (ITU), is establishing a standard for 3G products known as IMT-2000 and cdma2000 is seen as a strong contender. Samsung already has IMT-2000 trials with cdma2000 equipment agreed in Korea and in the USA, with PCS operator, SprintPCS.

Using different types of cdma2000 terminals, Samsung demonstrates some of the most sophisticated services developed for 3G applications. Audio on demand is available by downloading MP3 music files from the web onto a mobile phone. Video on demand provides video clips and movies straight onto the cdma2000 handset. Samsung's cdma2000 packet data network servers offer high speed access to the Internet providing users with new services such as GPS (Global Positioning Satellite) emergency location services.

Samsung is one of the first companies in the world to demonstrate its readiness for third generation wireless technology. The equipment is being demonstrated on the 800Mhz band although it will also operate in the IS-95 bands, 1.9GHz - 2.1GHz. The equipment, both handsets and network equipment, is made cdma2000-ready by the inclusion of a special cdma2000 ASIC (Applications Specific Integrated Circuit). Designed by Samsung, it is now being manufactured by the company in its own silicon foundry, in Gumi, Korea.

Samsung is committed to providing its users with competitive solutions for wireless and fixed communications by introducing products that are easy-to-use, reliable and offer the latest in business-critical features. Samsung has also made a major investment in research and development introducing state-of-the-art products and solutions that benefit business professionals around the world.
