Over-The-Air WAP Provisioning
Posted: 05-Mar-2000 [Source: Newsbytes]

[ offers multi-standard provisioning through its "Mobile Management Server" according to this report.]

By Steve Gold -- Newsbytes got a chance to catch up with Malcolm Bird, European managing director for [NASDAQ:PHCM], arguably the key firm in the fledgling Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) mobile phone marketplace.

Bird told Newsbytes that the firm has taken the wraps off the first WAP-based system for over-the-air provisioning of cellular handsets, a move that will help cellular operators reduce the operational and provisioning costs of new mobiles.

It will do this, he said, by simplifying the provisioning task for operator staff, and making it simpler and easier for a new subscriber to receive and use their handset.

Central to's over-the-air provisioning of handsets is the firm's Mobile Management Server (MMS) 1.0, which is billed as the first WAP-based system of its type.

The idea is that network operators can use MMS to securely provision their WAP gateways, applications, and handsets across multiple airlink standards including GSM, CDMA (code division multiple access), and TDMA (time division multiple access).
