Hong Kong Govt Aims To Offer 3G Mobile Licenses This Year

[The Hong Kong timetable for 3G is "end of year," with services in 2001 according to the Office of the Telecommunications Authority.]

By Adam Creed, Hong Kong -- "The Hong Kong Government said it is hoping to invite applications for third generation (3G) mobile telephone network licenses towards the end of this year, with commercial services expected to be available in 2001.

"3G services are the next step up for mobile services, capable of providing services like data rates up to 2 megabits per second and broadband multimedia delivery.

"The present timetable will enable the people of Hong Kong to enjoy 3G mobile services soonest possible," said a spokesperson of OFTA.
