Virgin pulls back from mobile license auction

London -- "Virgin Group is pulling back from the bidding for the third-generation mobile phone licenses in Britain by cutting its stake in SpectrumCo to less than 1 percent, according to a report in the U.K.'s Sunday Telegraph.

"SpectrumCo, a leading contender in the bidding for licenses to provide next-generation wireless services, has offered more than 1 billion pounds ($1.6 billion) for one of the five licenses the U.K. government is auctioning. The largest shareholder in the SpectrumCo consortium is Sonera (SNRA: news, msgs) of Finland.

"Virgin recently held a 5 percent stake in SpectrumCo, but the company said the change in ownership was insignificant: "We get an option to take a bigger stake if SpectrumCo wins...the structure now is irrelevant."
