Posted: 10-Apr-2000 [Source: Newsbytes]

[The GSM Global Roaming Forum promotes multistandard handsets supporting GSM/PCS, TDMA, CDMA and iDEN.]

By Steve Gold -- "Representatives from the world's major telecommunications companies and standards bodies met up in Chicago last week to thrash out a set of agreements to develop new global roaming technologies.

"Known as the GSM Global Roaming Forum, the new body aims to coordinate developments in the cellular industry that will see the arrival of multi-standard, multi-band handsets for true global roaming.

"These handsets, the forum said, will support multiple cellular standards, including GSM/PCS, TDMA, CDMA and iDEN. The forum's goal is to promote common mobile handsets and interoperable network platforms that can allow customers to roam from country to country, as well as across digital technologies and frequency bands.
