U.S. Firm Eyes Stake in Germany's Debitel

[Debitel is in discussions with an unnamed U.S. telecom company to team up on UMTS license acquisition according to this report. ]

Frankfurt -- "A large U.S. telecoms company is in negotiations with Swisscom and its German mobile phone subsidiary Debitel about taking an equity stake in the latter, industry sources said on Saturday.

"The sources declined to identify the U.S. company but said it was interested in entering the German and Swiss markets with the new UMTS third generation mobile phone licenses.

"The Unviersal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) is a high speed standard for mobile telephony and licenses in Germany are expected to cost up to 20 billion marks.

"Debitel holds its annual results news conference on Tuesday and sources say that the talks with the U.S. group could be completed by then and a possible announcement made.
