Scoot.com in mobile deal
Posted: 14-May-2000 [Source: FT]

[Location based services are planned in a partnership between scoot.com and Cambridge Positioning Systems.]

By Thorold Barker -- "Scoot.com, the internet and telephone directory service, is linking with Cambridge Positioning Systems to help develop its next generation of services.

"CPS develops positioning services for mobile phones. Charles Webb, Scoot's chief technology officer, said the type of service that could result from the alliance would include letting a customer book a nearby restaurant from a mobile phone and then providing a map of how to get there.

"He said there should be some services ready within 12 months, and that they would be available both through the call centre and mobile internet access.

"CPS will allow Scoot to pinpoint where a customer is, so it can recommend where the most convenient location is. A separate link-up with Webraska, an internet map company, would provide information on how to reach the place. This could also include traffic congestion information.
