China Unicom will use Qualcomm's 3G CDMA

[China Unicom plans to use CDMA for its next generation infrastructure according to this report.]

"China Unicom, China's number two telecoms provider, on Monday announced that it will use Qualcomm's CDMA technology for its third generation mobile services.

"Testing of the system is due to begin next year.

"China Unicom also confirmed on Monday, that it had raised price range for the institutional portion of its initial public offering this month from HK$13.80 to HK16.00 per share from HK11.50 to HK14.50.

"The IPO, with which China Unicom intends to raise US$5bn, is expected to rank as Asia's biggest offering this year

"The statement from Yang Xinazu, the chairman and chief executive officer of China Unicom, came after Unicom announced last week that it was scrapping plans to build a nationwide network using current CDMA technology.

"China Unicom currently uses the GSM standard, supplied by Nokia, Ericsson and local Chinese companies to connect its 7m subscribers.
