BT faces probe into internet access from mobiles
Posted: 17-Jun-2000 [Source: FT]

["We don't make any secret of the fact that we direct people to our portal..." says BT Cellnet.]

By Dan Roberts -- "British Telecommunications, the former state utility, is facing a probe by the government phones watchdog for preventing customers from choosing rival internet portals as their home page when accessing the net with a mobile phone.

"The move represents an important test case in the growing battle to ensure the same level of consumer freedom on wireless internet phones, or Waps, as has been achieved with PC-based internet browsers.

"Last month France Telecom lost a similar fight with internet company Wappup when a Paris court ruled that the partially state-owned giant was wrong to "lock" handsets so they could provide access through only its Voila portal.
