Newspapers Hope to WAP Themselves Around the Web
Posted: 18-Jun-2000 [Source: ComputerUser]

[The Newspaper Association of America is working to bring its members closer to the Mobile Internet age.]

By Kevin Featherly -- "Sensing inexorable motion toward a new "walk-around" Internet, a key newspaper industry group and one of the industry's foremost new media companies are looking to cell phones as a way to maintain audiences in a wireless world.

"The Newspaper Association of America (NAA) and Raleigh, N.C.-based Nando Media--an NAA member whose was among the first and most advanced online newspaper sites - are working together to organize the rest of the industry into a database of newspaper site URLs that feature wireless access protocol (WAP) and audiotext news services.

"Their work, which involves creating a "look-up" database of WAP-enabled newspaper sites that can be made available to mobile phone providers for display on cell phone entry screens, is in its very early stages. But the effort is an indication of the direction news providers appear to be moving in response to the coming wireless Web.

"... The journal also quoted a survey by Cap Gemini America and Corechange predicting that WAP phone penetration will rise from 3 percent in the US to 78 percent during 2000. That survey indicates that 72 million WAP phones will be sold in North America this year, compared to a project 45 million PC units sold.
