[Will China adopt CDMA technologies as its standard? Talks are starting in Beijing today.]

Beijing -- Korea and China will discuss cooperation plans in IMT-2000, CDMA-based communications, the Internet and software industries at the 9th bilateral communication ministerial meeting in Beijing today.

Information and Communication Minister Ahn Byong-yub will meet his counterpart, Chinese Posts and Telecommunications Minister Wu Jichuan, at the meeting, which was initiated at the APEC communications ministers' meeting in Mexico last month.

The meeting draws keen attention from domestic telecom firms, eager to learn whether the Chinese government will adopt CDMA technologies as the wireless standard. Korea is the world's first to develop commercial products based on the technology.

In addition to the ministerial meeting, Minister Ahn will attend the opening ceremony of Korea's IT Center in Beijing and the Korea-China Information Technology Venture Fair. He will also hold talks with high-level officials of China Unicom.

Ministerial advisor Lee Kun-soo, SK Telecom President Cho Jung-nam and LG Telecom President Suh Pyoung-won will accompany the minister, who will stay in Beijing through Wednesday. (HJJ)
