[Nokia begins production at new China handset manufacturing plant.]

Guangzhou, China -- "Nokia, a leading maker of mobile phones, has begun production at its new US$20 million plant in Dongguan in southern China's Guangdong province.

"The factory, with a floor space of 100,000 sq. meters, is equipped with the world's most advanced mobile-phone manufacturing technology.

"Nokia expects the facility to help increase the exports of its products. The Finnish company hopes that this year's exports will account for 50 percent of its total production, and that purchases within China will account for the other half.

"In 1995, Nokia started its first mobile-phone company in Dongguan, in cooperation with a local telecom development firm. The joint venture, which mainly produces digital mobile phones, built the world's first wireless application protocol (WAP) mobile phone in May 1999.

"Last year, Nokia exported 38 percent of its production in Dongguan, with the value of the exports surpassing US$1 billion.

"The company has so far invested more than US$1 billion in China, which is its second largest market worldwide.
