TDMA-EDGE Companies Converge In Argentina For Wireless Data Solutions
Posted: 03-Jul-2000 [Source: UWCC press release]

[TDMA and EDGE are gaining momentum in Latin America as industry leaders meet to discuss future trends in wireless data.]

Buenos Aires, Argentina -- The South American city of Buenos Aires, Argentina served as the backdrop for a members-only TDMA-EDGE Wireless Data Workshop hosted by the Universal Wireless Communications Consortium (UWCC). Over 70 attendees representing TDMA-EDGE operators and vendors engaged in a series of presentations from technology leaders in the industry committed to further the development and deployment of wireless data services in worldwide TDMA-EDGE networks. "TDMA-EDGE wireless operators from throughout the Americas are ready to provide wireless Internet services," commented Dr. Richard Downes, Director of Latin America & the Caribbean for the UWCC. Downes added, "The workshop clearly showed us that wireless data over TDMA-EDGE networks is a reality today throughout the Western Hemisphere." He continued, "The variety of solutions described at the seminar indicates that Latin American operators are investing in the relationships and specialized content essential for success in the high-speed mobile Internet of the future."

The workshop was kicked off by Andy Castonguay, Senior Analyst for Pyramid Research in Brazil, speaking about the Latin American wireless data market as a business case. Castonguay said, "TDMA has a significant advantage in Latin America due to coverage alone." He added, "With the large TDMA subscriber base and economies of scale, by 2004, TDMA will have the lion's share of the wireless market in Latin America." He indicated that EDGE will be the leading technology in Latin America because of time-to-market and the TDMA-EDGE operators ability to market services to their existing customers.

UWCC member companies including ATL (Brazil), AT&T Wireless, CMG Telecommunications, Compaq, Ericsson, Movilnet (Venezuela), Nortel Networks, Software.com, Telecom Personal, and Telefonica Unifon provided the TDMA-EDGE wireless data presentations. "It is the innovative work of our member companies that will successfully propel TDMA-EDGE into the next generation of services," stated Umesh Amin, Chairman of the UWCC Board of Governors. He added, "This collaborative effort will ultimately position TDMA-EDGE as a leading, cost effective, and spectrally efficient 3G wireless data solution for operators around the world."
