3G is on display at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games

[Olympic visitors can experience a live 3G demonstration this week including voice with video at data speeds of 144Kbps.]

Sydney, Australia -- Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., Worldwide Olympic Partner representing the Wireless Communications Equipment category at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, will demonstrate third-generation (3G) Code Division Multiple Access1x technology, also known as cdma2000 1x, from September 15 to October 1, 2000. The technology, which will deliver a host of new functions to wireless handsets including video conferencing, video-on-demand, music videos and mobile Internet services will be showcased for the first time in the Southern Hemisphere at the Olympic Rendezvous @ Samsung pavilion, located minutes from Stadium Australia in Sydney Olympic Park.

Samsung will display:

- how wireless video conferencing can take place using cdma2000 mobile phones' small colour LCD panels

- audio-on-demand by downloading MP3 music files directly from the Internet onto the mobile phone

- video clips and movies from mobile handsets through the video-on-demand service

Samsung's cdma2000 1x system delivers high-speed data to persons on the move. It is capable of wireless data transmission at speeds of up to 144kbps and can simultaneously provide audio, video and text data services, making it the most comprehensive wireless multimedia solution developed so far.

The high data transfer speeds allow users to view movies directly on their mobile phones by simply pressing the video function key and browsing through the list of movies available, similar to a movie rental store. Existing mobile networks running at speeds of 14.4Kbps are unable to transmit large files such as movies and videos. In addition to transmitting data at faster speeds, cdma2000 1x sends and receives data in packets. Therefore, when no data is being transmitted, the wireless channel can be allocated to other users, enhancing the efficiency of these channels. In contrast, other systems adopt a circuit approach for data services. This means that the wireless channel is occupied even when no data is being transmitted.

Currently compatible with existing CDMA systems that run at lower speeds of 9.6Kbps (IS-95A) and 64Kbps (IS-95B), cdma2000 1x has twice the wireless channel capacity, enabling it to accommodate at least double the traffic.

"A wireless communications revolution is unfolding which is characterised by demand for sophisticated voice and multi-media capabilities," commented Mr. Il-Hyung Chang, Vice President and Head of Olympic Projects for Samsung Electronics. "A medium that enables fast transmission of large-volume data per subscriber is therefore critical, to support both existing and future demands. Samsung has dedicated itself to the development of CDMA technology as the most efficient and cost-effective means of developing mobile networks that deliver the most benefits to customers."
