Global Mobile Phone Shipments Near 100 Million Units in Q2

[Japanese companies making significant gains in relation to the big three in manufacture and sale of mobile phones.]

Tokyo -- "The Dataquest unit of Gartner Group Japan KK reported that global shipments of mobile phones totaled 97.98 million units in the second quarter of 2000.

"The troika of Western cell phone makers continued to dominate the global market, but the latest survey revealed active growth by Japanese manufacturers in fourth spot and below.

"According to the survey, Finland's Nokia, Sweden's Ericsson, and Motorola Inc. of the United States together accounted for 53 percent of global shipments of mobile phones. Although there was no change in position by these three top companies, some Japanese firms made significant gains.
