[This announcement from the Intel Developer Forum 2000 being held in Tokyo. StrongARM provides capability for real-time voice and moving image data processing.]

Tokyo -- "NEC Corp. announced Sept. 20 that it will adopt the "SA-1110," Intel Corp.'s StrongARM microprocessor, in its next-generation mobile phone.

"The announcement was made at Intel Developer Forum 2000 Fall Japan held in Tokyo.

"NEC will debut the new mobile phone with StrongARM for the third-generation mobile communication service NTT DoCoMo Inc. plans to start in the spring of 2001.

"StrongARM will work as a multimedia processor. With it, those mobile phones will have the capability for real-time voice and moving image data processing such as MP3 and MPEG-4 format data.

"NEC said that the StrongARM microprocessor will lengthen a mobile phone's standby and communication times, even working with the multimedia functions. However, NEC and Intel did not say whether NEC will adopt Intel's next-generation StrongARM microprocessor, which was announced in August 2000.
