Researchers develop chip for ultrahigh bandwidth network

[High bandwidth technology LMDS expected to become centerpiece of wireless Internet services needing higher capacity transmission of data, voice and video.]

by Hwang Jang-jin -- "Korean researchers cleared a major hurdle in the commercialization of a new type of high-bandwidth wireless communications technology, called local multipoint distribution system (LMDS).

"Prof. Seo Kwang-sok of Seoul National University said his research team has recently developed a tiny chip that integrates functions of electricity amplification for the next-generation networking system.

"The development marks an important step in making the technology commercially viable.

"LMDS uses a frequency more than 10 times higher than those for personal communications service (PCS) or third generation wireless service called IMT-2000.

"The technology is scheduled to be deployed for wireless cable TV and two-way communications services in Japan in 2001 and in some other nations in 2002.

"Once commercialized, it will be the centerpiece of wireless Internet services that need higher-capacity transmission of data, voice and video, according to the electronics material and components research center in the university.
