UK mobile companies reject doubts over 3G video

by Richard Baum, London -- "Britain's mobile phone operators on Tuesday said third-generation services will offer only limited video facilities at first but dismissed Japanese claims that the technology was unsuitable for large multimedia files.

"They insisted customers will be able to download long video clips once expected improvements in compression technologies become available, although they questioned whether there would be demand for such services.

"Speaking at a conference, executives from Vodafone Group Plc (quote from Yahoo! UK & Ireland: VOD.L), British Telecommunications Plc (quote from Yahoo! UK & Ireland: BT.L) and Orange responded for the first time to doubts raised last week by NTT DoCoMo , the Japanese pioneer of mobile Internet access.
