"LG Electronics has developed 1.8-inch color organic electro luminescence (EL) display to be used for the IMT-2000 mobile handsets. "It is the latest in the company's efforts to take the market initiative in the next generation display which is expected to replace liquid crystal displays (LCDs) in mobile phones and digital cameras.
"EL uses luminescent materials that emit light when an electric current passes through them, unlike LCDs that needs a back light unit.
"The display has the advantage of lower power consumption and higher resolution and responds to commands about 1,000 times faster than LCDs. Due to its slim and light architecture, organic ELs are suitable for showing moving images on the third generation (3G) mobile communications gadgets like cell phones, personal digital assistants (PDAs) and small personal TVs.
