"Microsoft, Palm and closely held Symbian Ltd. are among the companies competing to license software to cell phone makers who want to add functions such as address books and appointment calendars to their devices. The software may ultimately be used to power phones that can be used to access data from the Internet. "Among other companies which have licensed Palm's operating system are Handspring Inc., Sony Corp. and Motorola.
