[Samsung's first Palm software device to be available by mid-year.]

by Greg Chang, Santa Clara, Calif. -- "Palm Inc. said it licensed the operating system for its electronic organizers to No. 4 cell-phone maker Samsung Electronics Co., as competition with rival Microsoft Corp. heats up.

"Microsoft, Palm and closely held Symbian Ltd. are among the companies competing to license software to cell phone makers who want to add functions such as address books and appointment calendars to their devices. The software may ultimately be used to power phones that can be used to access data from the Internet.

"Among other companies which have licensed Palm's operating system are Handspring Inc., Sony Corp. and Motorola. The agreement with Samsung comes after the Seoul-based company said in June that it would license Microsoft's rival software for cell phones.
