by Jeremy Pelofsky, Washington -- "A dash for fresh new airwaves began in earnest Tuesday with wireless companies offering a net $501.2 million after two rounds of bidding for licenses that will advance deployment of mobile wireless devices.

"Verizon Wireless, a joint venture between Verizon Communications and Vodafone Group Plc, topped the competition with a net $131.1 million in bids during the second round, according to the Federal Communications Commission (news - web sites).
