Washington, D.C. -- The Wireless Data Forum, the leading trade association for wireless data and mobile computing, announced today that the WDF membership has approved overwhelmingly its proposed merger with the newly renamed Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association (CTIA). The new merger means CTIA will increase its emphasis on mobile data and wireless Internet issues, in terms of both show programming and public policy development, which will provide WDF members with new opportunities to contribute to CTIA's myriad of industry-building efforts.

"The timing of this merger couldn't be better, with wireless data and the mobile Internet moving to center stage in the wireless industry," said Mark Desautels, President and CEO of the Wireless Data Forum. "CTIA, through its industry-leading shows and exhibitions, provides the perfect platforms from which WDF member companies can help launch this nascent industry. With its success in the public policy arena, CTIA also offers the incoming members from the WDF a well-respected advocate on Capitol Hill and before the regulatory agencies, venues which are certain to become an increasingly important as new industry challenges and obstacles unfold.

"For its part, the WDF brings to CTIA a wealth of companies who are driving the wireless Internet market. The resulting Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association is certain to be an industry-building force well into the future." CTIA also plans to create a Wireless Internet Caucus, which will serve as a vehicle to surface issues of importance and interest to the wireless Internet industry. WDF member companies will be invited to participate. The WDF staff will join CTIA as the Department for Wireless Internet Development.
