Bright broadband future Posted: 21-Dec-2000 [Source: WAP.com] [Handset production projected to be entirely 3G by 2010.] by Charles Rudkin, London -- "A report by telecommunications market research firm Analysys for mobile Internet platform provider 3G Labs says that UMTS (universal mobile telecommunications system) networks will cover all of Europe by 2010. The report also says that Europe will lead the world in mobile phone penetration by that date with 250m 3G mobile phone subscribers, about 64% of the population. "Broadband isn't just set to explode in Europe, but all over the world. The study estimates that by 2006 one third of the world's projected 480m mobile phone subscribers will be hooked up to 3G networks. By 2010 all mobile phones in Europe and North America will be 3G devices. Worldwide, there will be a total of 1.04bn broadband mobile phone subscribers.
