[Chunghwa Telecom's President to steer his company towards GSM and 3G expecting them to surpass CDMA globally.]

Taipei -- "Chunghwa Telecom has decided to scrap its tender offer for code division multiple access phone procurement.

"Chunghwa Telecom invited the tender for its CDMA cellular phone procurement, which was valued at NT$50 billion, on Aug. 8. The lucrative procurement contract attracted seven bidders: Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., Nortel Networks Corp., Ericsson, Motorola Inc. (teaming up with Alcatel), Hyundai Electronics Industries Co., Ltd., Lucent Technologies Inc. and LG Electronics Inc. They are said to have plowed a lot of money into preparations for winning the tender, and are expected to incur heavy losses following its cancellation.
