Canada kicks off high-speed wireless auction
Posted: 15-Jan-2001 [Source: Reuters]

[Canda becomes the first to conduct spectrum auction via the Internet.]

By Ian Karleff -- "Seven companies have made deposits totaling more than C$640 million ($427 million) to bid in Canada's second auction for high-speed wireless spectrum, which commenced on Monday and is expected to generate proceeds of about C$1.5 billion ($1 billion).

"Up for grabs are 40 megahertz of spectrum in 16 markets across Canada, auctioned off in 10 megahertz blocks for a total of 62 individual licenses.

"Industry Canada expects the auction, conducted entirely over the Internet in simultaneous rounds, to be completed within six weeks.

"The auctioned spectrum will enable incumbent wireless carriers to alleviate capacity constraints on their networks to make way for further subscriber growth, and to pave the way for bandwidth-intensive services like wireless video conferencing.

"Proceeds from the auction are not expected to reach the dizzying heights seen in some recent European auctions of third-generation spectrum -- a step above what Canada is offering in terms of data carrying capability.
