Faster way to wireless Web comes to area
Posted: 10-Feb-2001 [Source: AkronBeachJournal]

[Twelve major U.S. metro areas now covered by Metricom's Ricochet II service with 46 more to come on-line by the end of the year.]

by Laura Haferd -- "BATH TWP.: America is coming unplugged.

"Not unplugged in the sense of being disconnected or acoustic. It's just that we want to be connected -- mind, body and briefcase -- without wires.

"Now a new high-powered version of the wireless Web access technology pioneered on college campuses is rolling out in major markets, including in Northeast Ohio.

"One company already has agreements with Barberton, Cuyahoga Falls, Tallmadge and other Northeast Ohio municipalities for rights of way.

"The new Ricochet II wireless Internet service from Metricom Inc. guarantees a minimum of a 128 kbps (kilobytes per second) high-bandwidth Internet connection to executives on the move. This is several times faster than the wireless Web access through cellphone networks (text-only transfers displayed on such devices as the Handspring Visor for palm-size computers).

"With that data speed, a corporate road warrior could do away with his cellphone and use an Internet phone in a laptop to call worldwide, with no long-distance fees.

"Using packet-burst data transmission technology, data coded and streamed in small chunks, Ricochet II is being hailed by industry observers like PC World magazine as the top-line connection for high-powered business users.
