Gov't postpones plan to select cdma2000 operator indefinitely
Posted: 24-Feb-2001 [Source: The Korea Herald]

[Korean government hopes qualified bidders will appear during the first half of the current year in efforts to resume the selection process.]

By Shin Hye-son -- "The government announced yesterday that it has indefinitely postponed the selection of an IMT-2000 service provider based on the cdma2000 mode, raising strong doubts that it would ever be able to select one.

"Minister of information and communication Ahn Byong-yub said that the government has decided on the delay because it would take more time before a reliable consortium which can bid for the license is formed.

"Some domestic and foreign companies interested in the third-generation telecom business, including a group led by Hanaro Telecom, have asked for the delay, saying that they need more time to draw up investment plans and form consortiums," Ahn explained.
