by Gareth Vaughan, Paris -- "Alcatel [FR:013000] [US:ALA], the French telecoms equipment maker, said on Thursday its sales of mobile phones during the first quarter were proving to be lower than in the same period of 2000.

"The French group joins a growing list of mobile phone makers, including Motorola, Ericsson and Matsushita, that have warned this year that times are getting tougher in the industry.

"Alcatel said sales were slowing due to excess inventory in distribution channels at the start of the year and a general market slowdown. Shares in Alcatel, which fell more than 3 percent initially, were up 0.91 percent at GBP47.78.
