Wireless Giants to Develop Single Games Standard
Posted: 22-Mar-2001 [Source: Reuters]

[Group's initial efforts will involve agreeing on applications programming interfaces and a software development kit.]

by Ben Klayman -- "Three wireless telecommunications giants, hoping to entice consumers to use their cell phones for games as well as calls, said on Wednesday they will develop a single games standard for wireless communications devices.

"Motorola Inc. (NYSE:MOT - news), Ericsson (LMEb.ST)(NasdaqNM:ERICY - news) and Siemens AG (news - web sites)'s (SIEGn.DE) wireless unit said they expect to make specifications by the third quarter for a universal mobile games platform, using existing and emerging standards, to use on such devices as cell phones and personal digital assistants.

"With sluggish growth in cell phone sales, and numerous telecom companies laying off employees and ratcheting back growth estimates, the new games standard would be a way to make cell phones more attractive to consumers and more profitable for the providers, officials said.
