Sprint chairman dismisses merger speculation

by Richard Waters, New York -- "Sprint's chairman seems to have ruled out merging with a local telecommunications company, increasing the likelihood that the troubled US long-distance carrier will seek to go it alone after last year's failed attempt to merge with rival WorldCom.

"The comments by Bill Esrey, in an interview last week, come at a time when Sprint has been widely rumoured to have explored a merger with BellSouth, a US "Baby Bell", or local carrier.

"Mergers that would pair local companies such as BellSouth and SBC Communications with long-distance carriers such as Sprint and WorldCom have long been seen as a likely outcome of the erosion of regulatory barriers in the US telecoms industry.
