Cloudy Outlook for Airwaves on 3G Services
Posted: 31-Mar-2001 [Source: Reuters]

[The reallocation of US spectrum needs for 3G services faces considereable obstacles per both the NTIA and FCC reports released Friday.]

by Jeremy Pelofsky, Washington -- "The rollout of advanced mobile data and voice services in the United States suffered a blow on Friday as two government reports detailed the difficulties for making available or sharing airwaves with commercial wireless operators.

"The U.S. government is struggling to find more spectrum to accommodate the expected rollout of so-called third generation (3G) wireless services that would include high-speed Internet access and be in overlapping bands used overseas so Americans could roam onto other networks while abroad.

"However, some of the airwaves initially identified as potentially usable for 3G are used by the Defense Department, specifically the 1710-1850 megahertz band, while other airwaves, the 2500-2690 MHz band, are used for fixed wireless cable as well as video services at schools and health care centers.
