Germany may allow 3G operators to co-operate

by Dan Roberts in London and Bertrand Benoit in Frankfurt -- "Europe's struggling third generation mobile phone operators enjoyed a rare run of optimism on Monday amid signs that Germany's telecom regulator may trigger a wave of consolidation.

"Licence holders in both the UK and Germany announced they had secured E4.5bn ($4bn) from banks and other lenders, while BT Cellnet confirmed it was discussing ways of reducing infrastructure costs by co-operating with UK rivals.

"The biggest fillip may come from Germany, where investors worry that six licence holders will struggle in an intensely competitive environment.
