[Using 802.11b coverage in building community-supported wireless networks.]

by David Sims -- "The NoCat Community Wireless Project started out as a way to browse the Web while enjoying a $4 cup of coffee. Rob Flickenger, a systems administrator at O'Reilly Network, a Sebastopol, Calif.-based portal for network developers, wanted to see if he could use an external antenna to extend the range on his company's wireless network so it would reach across the street to a coffee house where employees often hold meetings. When it worked, he set up an antenna at his house on a hill a half mile from work. He then began to realize he could cover much of tiny Sebastopol, Calif., with 802.11b coverage, for very little cost.
