Korean telecom firms stepping up efforts to tap Chinese CDMA mart

[Anticipation for China Unicom's selection for system and equipment providers is heating up with Korean companies looking to secure 15-20 percent of China's system market and 30 percent of their handset market.]

by H.S. Shine -- "With China Unicom's selection of equipment and system providers for its CDMA (code division multiple access) network close at hand, Korea is stepping up efforts to tap the burgeoning and potentially huge Chinese market.

"China Unicom, a state-run telecom operator, plans to open a CDMA network covering 300 areas and handling about 13.3 million subscribers this October, and is expected to select system and equipment providers by April.

"To promote the Korean CDMA technology at the bidding, Information and Communication Minister Yang Seung-taik is currently visiting China, after arriving last Saturday for a six-day schedule.

"Yang was accompanied by prominent industrial figures, such as Donga Telecom Chairman Lee Kun-soo, SK Telecom Vice Chairman Cho Jung-nam, LG Electronics Vice Chairman Koo Ja-hong, Samsung Electronics Vice President Kang Ho-mun, Telson Electrics Vice Chairman Kim Dong-yeon and Lee Chung-yong of Taihan Electric Wire.
