Two key mobile operators at odds over launch of IMT-2000 services
Posted: 19-Apr-2001 [Source: The Korea Herald]

[Korean launch of 3G services at risk of being postponed for three years.]

by Shin Hey-son -- "Talk of a possible delay in the launch of full-fledged 3G (third-generation) mobile service, called "IMT-2000" here, has returned.

"According to a policy change by the Ministry of Information and Communication, the services are to be launched in May next year, but industry watchers are hinting at a postponement by as much as three years because of the conflicting interests among operators.

"SK Telecom (SKT), which obtained a license to deploy 3G networks on the W-CDMA (wide code division multiple access) standard at the end of last year, insists 3G services will be launched after it merges with SK-IMT, its subsidiary in charge of the IMT-2000 project.
