Kabira Powers One of World's First Pre-paid GPRS Implementations

[TAL, a wireless operator in Iceland, to use Kabira's Object Switch software platform to inroduce pre-paid GPRS services.]

San Francisco, Calif. -- Kabira(tm) Technologies Inc., a provider of infrastructure software for revenue-generating convergent services over the Internet, broadband and wireless networks, announced today that TAL hs., a leading wireless operator in Iceland, is using Kabira's ObjectSwitch software platform to introduce one of the world's first pre-paid GPRS 2.5G voice and high-speed data services available, and to serve as a foundation for the creation and deployment of several advanced revenue-generating services including pre-paid SMS services.

The introduction of next generation mobile networks and services including Global Packet Radio Service (GPRS) and Short Message Service (SMS - Digital Paging) has resulted in an order of magnitude increase in complexity at every level of a service provider's network. This complexity extends from the network switching level through Operational Support Systems (OSS) -- including mediation and provisioning systems -- and Business Support Systems (BSS) -- such as mobile commerce, content and billing systems.

TAL selected Kabira's ObjectSwitch platform to integrate all levels of its network systems and to aggregate them into one cohesive system view. This enabled TAL to generate and collect revenue for new applications and services and to introduce one of the world's first pre-paid GPRS networks to access those services. Furthermore, Kabira ensures that TAL has the ability to rapidly accommodate inevitable but presently unknown new services and functionality.

"We cannot afford to rely on conventional tools to compete in today's market, particularly with limited engineering resources," said Oskar B. Hauksson, Information Technology Director of TAL. "The Kabira platform allows us to rapidly build, provision and bill for the most innovative GPRS services, enabling us to maximize our engineering productivity and provide our customers with the most compelling services faster than our competitors."

Kabira's ObjectSwitch software platform enables next generation service providers to both create and deploy new services while leveraging their investment in current network and services infrastructure. It meets the carrier-grade requirements of performance, scalability and high availability.

"Advanced service providers like TAL require the ability to anticipate demand for new, 'fashionable' voice and data services. Additionally, they must be able to immediately generate, deploy and collect revenue for those services and execute with fewer engineering resources," said Frederic Aries, vice president and general manager of EMEA for Kabira Technologies. "Our platform enables our customers to create differentiating services in 'man-weeks' instead of months or years. We are providing forward-thinking customers like TAL with the ability to plan for unforeseen requirements while ensuring they stay ahead of the market with new service offerings that generate revenue in synch with service roll-outs."
