Micro Java fires up the cell phone
Posted: 11-May-2001 [Source: MSNBC]

[The new Motorola i85s offered by Nextel supports the Java micro edition platform.]

by Rob Pegoraro -- "The wonderful thing about the latest cell phones is how they pack in so many extra functions that you rarely have to bother actually using them to talk.

"The latest demonstration of this trend is Motorola's new i85s. Beyond the usual array of wireless-phone bonus functions -- datebook, voice-memo recording, text-only Web access, messaging -- this Nextel phone includes a handful of very un-phone-like tools. There's a bundle of calculators for everything from converting measurements to adding up tips to designing staircases, an expense-tracking tool and even a version of the Sega game Borkov.

"If you don't like that selection, you can install other programs -- a loan calculator, a golf scorekeeper, and tick-tack-toe, Reversi and the perpetually popular Minesweeper.

"This profusion of time-sucking programs is possible because the i85s (with its less expensive sibling, the i50sx) can run Java programs. As such, it-s something gadget users have been waiting awhile for.
