KDDI Cell Phone Service Pinpoints Users' Location
Posted: 05-Jun-2001 [Source: The Nihon Keizai Shimbun]

[New handset positioning service is expected to provide 10 meter accuracy.]

Tokyo -- "KDDI Corp. is due to begin offering as early as October a satellite-based service that allows cell phone users to identify their location to an accuracy of about 10 meters, company sources said Saturday.

"The location of the user will appear on the phone's display.

"The service is based on the same technology as the global positioning system used in car navigation systems. To handle the service, a cell phone requires a special semiconductor for receiving satellite signals.

"Similar cell phone services that do not use satellites are far less accurate, sometimes having a margin of error of more than 100 meters.

"KDDI phones equipped with the special chip will cost 30,000 yen to 40,000 yen. No basic user fee is expected.
