PICCA deals blow to LG's bid for 3G mobile license
Posted: 16-Jun-2001 [Source: The Korea Herald]

[PICCA decides not to take part in the LGT led IMT2000 consortium.]

"LG Telecom's bid to win an IMT-2000 mobile service license suffered a huge setback yesterday as the Promising Information and Communication Companies Association (PICCA) decided not to participate in a consortium being promoted by the mobile operator.

"The PICCA board members' decision lent support to Hanaro Telecom, which has been calling for the formation of a "grand consortium," as opposed to a consortium led by a single company.

"We have decided to focus our efforts on creating a grand consortium in the true sense of the word," Suh Seung-mo, a PICCA vice chairman, said.

"Suh said PICCA's decision not to take part in the LGT-led consortium was a result of LGT's refusal to guarantee that PICCA would have a say in running the new company.

"Members of our association want to participate in the cdma2000-mode IMT-2000 service not because of the prospect of gaining some investment profits, but because they want to create a market where they can sell their technology and products," Suh said.
