Tokyo -- "Japan's KDDI Corp said on Monday it would start selling Java-ready mobile phones next month in a bid to lure more subscribers with content-rich Web services.

"The move comes as Japan's second-largest telecoms firm scrambles to beef up revenue from non-voice services to offset shrinking income in its fixed-line business.

"Called "ezplus", the new Java handsets will allow users to shop over their cell phones and download applications from the Internet, KDDI said.

"Java is a programming language developed by Sun Microsystems that works on various operating systems. It lets cell phones access a wide range of interactive content, including games and financial tools.
