Verizon Wants 3G Mobile Standards Clash Resolved

by Richard Baum, London -- "U.S. mobile phone operator Verizon Wireless on Thursday urged supporters of two competing technologies for high-speed mobile services to work together to ensure customers could use a single type of handset worldwide.

"Hopes that the introduction of third-generation (3G) mobiles would produce one global transmission standard -- replacing the incompatible systems currently used in Europe, the United States and Japan -- have been dented by the emergence of two competing technologies, CDMA2000 and W-CDMA (news - web sites).

"There's enough engineering expertise around the world to bring together the two competing camps," said Dennis Strigl, president and chief executive of Verizon.
