Enable mobile roaming abroad
Posted: 30-Jul-2001 [Source: Business Europe]

[Roaming 101 for those of you traveling abroad and planning on using your mobile handset.]

"Mobile phones are an essential tool and staying in touch when working overseas is critical to your business. International 'roaming' is the answer to maintaining communication with the office back home.

"Most mobile network providers use Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM), the international digital mobile phone system used throughout western Europe and the US. Where you can roam depends on the type of phone you have: single band, dual band or tri band. This is because different networks around the world work on different radio frequencies. You can use single- and dual-band phones for roaming in France and Germany but if you're traveling to the US or Canada, you will need a tri-band phone which operates on GSM1900 networks. When traveling in the US or Canada with a Tri band phone you will have to manually change the band to GSM1900 for it to work.
